Things to expect in this drama
Tsubasa Honda as an idol
Swindle the swindlers
Fun characters
Now for the review:
Swindle the swindlers is the objective. This team consists of the former policeman Kamo Yuto, ex-detective, Negishi Shun, genius hacker, Mizuki Maruyama, and the wannabe idol, Saki Hoshino who seems to be fitted for this job as she's clearly the brain of this group. The team is lead by Anzai Kazuki, whose character is still a mystery right now.
It reminds me of the Korean drama The Swindlers as they have the same premise, but this one is one the comedy side, so don't expect high production, unpredictable twist and turns, realistic acting, and excellent execution. The comedy is very Jdorama comedy, so if you can't handle those, then pick another drama to watch.
It's the type of story where you will enjoy it not because the cases are interesting or the execution is smart, but because of the interaction of these characters. It's also episodic, and the pacing is quite fast, so no dull moments at all.
Cheat excels with its characters; they are exciting bunch with different quirks. It's only one episode, but I love them already. It also helps that some of the supporting characters star in popular dramas before like Kaneko Daichi (Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru), Uesugi Shuhei (Sachiiro no One Room), Fukuhara Haruka (Coffee and Vanilla) and Tomita Miu (Switched).
The acting is just fine, and there's no need for festival movie acting for this genre anyway, so even though Honda has a reputation for being a bad actress, she can handle being the lead here because it's a comedy.
Just a good start, nothing spectacular, but good enough to keep me look forward to the next episodes.
