Best Japanese Dramas of 2023

This is the list of what in my opinion the best Japanese dramas of 2021 and 2022 but first I want to mention what taste I have for dramas. I'm not fan of cliché and tropes so you may not find popular mystery and romance dramas on this list however I'm a huge fan of slice of life since the human condition fascinates me a lot and Japan is the champion for that. I am now in that part of my life where watching dramas are not just entertainment some of them are my source to feed my soul. Dramas with depth, characters that uplifts or stories that would give a different perspective; those factors are what I value the most. I also like fresh and think outside the box type of stories, those who seek new concepts and especially those who rebel against the fundamental aspects of storytelling, so don't be surprised if you find weird quirky shows or some atmospheric dramas included on this list. Let's begin.

Omameda Towako to Sannin no Motootto

Drama: My Dear Exes (English title)
Romaji: Omameda Towako to Sannin no Motootto
Japanese: 大豆田とわ子と三人の元夫
Director: Kazuhito Nakae, Chihiro Ikeda, Yusuke Taki
Writer: Yuji Sakamoto
Actors: Takako Matsu, Masaki Okada, Akihiro Kakuta, Ryuhei Matsuda, Mikako Ichikawa, Joe Odagiri

Plot Synopsis

After three divorces, Omameda Towako now lives with her 15-year-old daughter, Uta. Towako was recently appointed president of the construction company, Shirokuma Housing. Despite her marital setbacks, she remains enthusiastically motivated, boldly, and confidently going through her life, one that is all too often disrupted by her troublesome former husbands.

When was the last time I said to myself "damn I didn't see that coming at all" probably 5 years ago when I watched pink and gray. This drama throws curveballs after curveballs but with core message that will hit straight into your kokoro. It rewards people who are keen into details, it won't spoon-feed you about everything it is very subtle. If you are familiar with Yuji Sakamoto's work vibe is like Saikou no Rikon, Quartet but for me this is even better, better characterization for its characters, characters that contributes to the overall theme of the story, from the start to finish it's all connected, masterful writing from the master himself, best drama written by him since Soredemo, Ikite Yuku.

Okaeri Mone

Drama: Welcome Back, Mone (literal title)
Romaji: Okaeri Mone
Japanese: おかえりモネ
Director: Masae Ichiki, Toki Kajiwara, Tomohiro Kuwano, Yasuko Tsuda
Writer: Naoko Adachi
Actors: Kaya Kiyohara, Seiyo Uchino, Kyoka Suzuki, Aju Makita, Ren Nagase, Tadanobu Asano, Kentaro Sakaguchi, Hidetoshi Nishijima

Plot Synopsis

Momone Nagaura lives with her parents, grandfather and younger sister on an island in Kesennuma Bay, Miyagi Prefecture. In the spring of 2014, Momone Nagaura graduates from high school and moves to the city of Tome. She fails to enter a university. While she tries to figure out what to do with her life, she begins to work as an apprentice of a forest guide. A turning point in her life occurs.

Among all the asadoras that I've watched I think this is one of the most serious and deepest one. I've heard news in Japan where there is a debate whether it's better to just relocate people who reside in dangerous areas and there is part in this drama where they tackled that beautifully that's one, the other is how they approach the mental health part which felt stronger from middle up to the end. There is a character which only appeared a bit, we haven't even seen his face, but when everything is done and you look at the drama as a whole you would feel his addition is genius, subtle yet so powerful. The characters are also more grounded than other asadoras no one here felt caricature. The main lead is not the same cheerful asadora heroine we used to see a bit timid especially at the start but Kiyohara is really a wonderful actress able to show her character struggles with subtle acting, the best is her scenes with her sister and sensei, those have really wonderful writing. I will remember this drama as the time when Kaya Kiyohara and Makita Aju met two of the best young actress in Japan, hard to believe those 2 are just 19 with how they played their character effectively. Lastly if you are looking for romance then I bet you would love this drama, it is much better than most jdramas in that aspect, no piggyback ride, a guy chasing a girl inside a bus or other larger than life romantic scenes, here it is just dialogue between mone and sensei, slow burn, innocent and mature love.

Oi Handsome!
Drama: Hey Handsome
Romaji: Oi Handsome!!
Japanese: おいハンサム!!
Director: Masatoshi Yamaguchi, Naruhide Mizuta
Writer: Risa Ito (manga), Masatoshi Yamaguchi
Actors: Kotaro Yoshida, Haruka Kinami, Yui Sakuma, Rena Takeda, Megumi

Plot Synopsis

58-year-old Ito Gentaro lives with his wife Chizuru in a house in Tokyo. Each of their three daughters should have left home and lived well. However, their eldest daughter 28-year-old Yuka is single and doing well at work but propensity for affairs. Their 25-year-old second daughter Rika wedded a highly educated man and lives in Osaka but the couple are on the brink of divorce. Their youngest daughter 22-year-old Mika is also single and the moment she gets to start living on her own, she half cohabits with a man who does not seem like he will be a successful manga artist. Gentaro worries endlessly about his daughters who are poor judges of character.

That restaurant scene in episode 1 when he brings the rookie is so clever that it almost made me tear up and from that point I knew this drama will be special. This show is not just comedy. It consists of different skits some are really funny and some deeply moving so don't expect the pace and development similar to a normal drama. Having said that it didn't become disjointed in fact there is a theme they followed per episode. Writing is clever, witty and dialogue heavy that sometimes it felt you are watching an indie movie. Characters are just the best their chemistry is insane, Ito family are effortlessly funny. This drama is very good all episodes but what makes it stand out is it stick to its landing, the ending is superbly done, a perfectly executed conclusion.

More than Words

Drama: More than Words
Romaji: Moazanwazu
Japanese: モアザンワーズ
Director: Hashizume Shunki
Writer: Asano Taeko
Actors: Fujino Ryoko, Aoki Yuzu, Nakagawa Daisuke, Kanechika Daiki

Plot Synopsis

The story revolves around two best friends, Mieko and Makio, who end up working a part-time job at the same place. At their new job, they meet a university student, Eiji, who ends up falling for Makio. Despite everyone around them being against the relationship, Mieko decides to watch over them as they grow, and their bonds and relationships gradually change.

The director really has all the liberty in the world filming this, the style, ambiance and theme . . . it's his canvass, his paint brush, it's all him. I imagine it will have a hard time getting a green light from any Japanese local TV stations so thanks to Amazon prime for that. This show's biggest strength is also the same magic of those slow Japanese films and that's the "power of mundanity". Those small trivial moments contributes so much for the characterization and its realism. In a way for modern Japanese filmmakers it reminded me of Kobayashi Keiichi and Imaizumi Rikiya for the style and based on the flow of dialogue. Subtlety is also one thing people may love or hate, the story won't spoonfeed you about everything you will need to pay close attention to small details, but also for our main trio, do not always take their words at face value. Lastly I keep on seeing debates whether a show is BL or not but now I finally see the difference it's like shoujo vs grounded love stories, fanservice vs reality, and no this story doesn't need season two because in Japanese dramas staying true to its theme is more important than what you want.

Ima Koko ni Aru Kiki to Boku no Kokando ni Tsuite

Drama: Ima Koko ni Aru Kiki to Boku no Kokando ni Tsuite
Japanese: 今ここにある危機とぼくの好感度について
Director: Horikirizono Kentaro, Takeshi Shibata
Writer: Watanabe Aya
Actors: Matsuzaka Tori, Suzuki Anne, Matsushige Yutaka

Plot Synopsis

Makoto Kanzaki is a university PR man swept up by a series of scandals for which he must create the perfect spin, only to find himself totally painted into a corner.

To think the drama aired before the Olympics I must say I really appreciate how they made this drama. Brilliant performance from Tori Matsuzaka, I laughed so hard when he said the golden rule cleanliness, smile but more importantly don't make any sense, brutal and painful risk management. The drama is satire and dark comedy, you will laugh as they present you serious real world issues. I guess that's the power of that genre so that these topics will be easy to consume for most people.

"The more we bash someone's failure, the more cover-ups there will be. Severe punishment will never improve the situation"

One quote I like in this drama as it shows this drama is not one sided.

Koisenu Futari

Drama: A Couple Without Falling in Love
Romaji: Koisenu Futari
Japanese: 恋せぬふたり
Director: Yudai Noguchi, Yuta Oshida, Shohei Doi
Writer: Erika Yoshida
Actors: Yukino Kishii, Issey Takahashi

Plot Synopsis

Sakuko finds it difficult to live in a society which operates under the assumption that people will fall in love with each other. She meets supermarket employee Takahashi when she goes to support a "fall-in-love" campaign by her junior at work. She is startled when she hears him say that there are people who don't fall in love. As Sakuko's mother keeps hurrying her to get married, she decides to move out and rent an apartment with her friend but her friend backs out at the last minute after reconciling with her ex-boyfriend. Just when Sakuko is about to give up, she ends up living with Takahashi under one roof because of their similar values towards romance.

Perfect pacing with very good acting but it is the writing the standout for me. This drama is somewhat revolutionary as it may be the first time aroace people were represented in a mainstream media so it is good to hear that the writer won an award, she indeed achieved something remarkable here. The dialogue in episode 4 and 8 is a masterpiece. I especially love that ending it is so satisfying some movies achieved that with a wedding scene here they found their safe haven. This drama is for everyone since to us humans the concept of safe haven is universal.

Koko wa Ima kara Rinri desu

Drama: From Now On We Begin Ethics (literal title)
Romaji: Koko wa Ima kara Rinri desu
Japanese: ここは今から倫理です
Director: Tetsuya Watanabe, Michi Ono, Yohei Ohno
Writer: Shiori Amase (manga), Aya Takaha
Actors: Yuki Yamada, Mizuki Kayashima, Yuto Ikeda

Plot Synopsis

Takayanagi is a mysterious high school ethics teacher. While his students appear innocent, they have serious problems, k as being bullied and harming themselves. Takayanagi tosses out words & ideas on ethics and philosophy to his class. The words written in textbook seem boring, but those written by such figures Socrates empower the students to deal with their own problems and lives.

The story dives into so many issues but didn't really give absolute solution instead it promotes critical thinking to its viewers which I think is very important. I find those episodes where they have characters with contrast issues just to explore the subject matter brilliant, well written and well directed it's also the reason why I wish it has more time for better characterization especially for the male lead, episode 5 for example is a masterpiece. A deeply profound drama like this will always stay relevant since our world is just a huge extension of this class especially with the advent of social media.

Konto ga Hajimaru

Drama: Life's Punchline
Romaji: Konto ga Hajimaru
Japanese: コントが始まる
Director: Ryuichi Inomata, Ko Kanai
Writer: Shigeki Kaneko
Actors: Masaki Suda, Kasumi Arimura, Taiga Nakano, Kotone Furukawa, Ryunosuke Kamiki

Plot Synopsis

Haruto Takaiwa, Shunta Asabuki and Junpei Minowa are members of unpopular comedy trio Macbeth. They always gather at a family restaurant where Rihoko Nakahama works as a waitress. Tsumugi Nakahama is Rihoko Nakahama’s younger sister. This is a story of five young people in their late 20s who try to overcome their great failures in life.

I love the dialogue, the characters especially the relationships presented in this drama from friendship, siblings relationship, parents , teacher, manager, love interest, the drama explored it really well, the narration done from each characters is also a nice touch. I also like how they didn't force romance in the story it would only happen if it makes sense in relation to the core theme the drama wanted to convey. All the cast seems to be having fun while filming their chemistry is great. Suda Masaki is great as usual, Arimura Kasumi is perfectly casted, Kamiki and Furukawa an interesting couple and Nakano Taiga's comedic timing is spot on. Konto ga Hajimaru is my quintessential Japanese drama of 2021.

Mystery to Iunakare

Drama: Don't Call it Mystery (English title) / Do Not Say Mystery (literal title)
Romaji: Mystery to Iu Nakare
Japanese: ミステリと言う勿れ
Director: Hiroaki Matsuyama, Shunsuke Shinada, Hideyuki Aizawa, Hiroyuki Abe
Writer: Yumi Tamura (manga), Tomoko Aizawa
Actors: Masaki Suda, Sairi Itoh, Mugi Kadowaki, Eita Nagayama

Plot Synopsis

Totono Kuno is a university student. He has curly hair, which he has a complex about. He doesn't have any friends or a girlfriend. His memory and observation skills are very good and he is also skilled at making conclusions from a given set of facts. A murder case takes place in a park near Totono Kuno’s home. The victim is a university student that attended the same school and Totono Kuno becomes a suspect in the murder. He is interrogated by detectives at the police station. During the interrogation, Totono Kuno becomes aware of hidden clues behind the student's murder and also the personal worries of the detectives. But a weapon, which contains Totono Kuno’s fingerprints, is found.

I didn't like it at first but ended up loving it. Latter half is much better than first half especially when all these cases got tied together. Some random cases are also not useless as those had some of the most thoughtful writing, those running time forms Totono as a character. The mysteries at latter episodes are also much better, some of those tricks are fresh I haven't seen those before. This drama is so popular and the story is nowhere finish so no doubt it will have a sequel, momentum is important though it should be sooner than later.

Iribito

Drama: Iribito: Stranger
Romaji: Iribito: Iribito
Japanese: いりびと-異邦人-
Director: Kentaro Hagiwara
Writer: Maha Harada (novel), Hisayo Seki
Actors: Mitsuki Takahata, Shunsuke Kazama, Yutaka Matsushige, Sumire, Meiko Kaji

Plot Synopsis

Naho is the deputy curator of the art gallery established by her grandfather, an avid art collector. Naho's husband is the managing director at a different art gallery in Ginza which his family has run for several generations. To avoid the hectic pace of Tokyo, a pregnant Naho decides to move to Kyoto. There, she finds a painting by an unknown painter. She becomes fascinated with it and soon faces an unexpected truth.

In terms of production quality this could be the best WOWOW has offered which means the best in Japan and yes even counting those on Netflix this is just pure art. Unique atmosphere, strong theme with thrilling soundtrack, acting is also very good. Matsushige Yutaka is very effective as a villain. That combo of Takahata Mitsuki and Sumire just works, Mitsuki with her strong acting performance and Sumire's screen presence galore.

Influence

Drama: Influence
Romaji: Influence
Japanese: インフルエンス
Director: Naruhide Mizuta, Paul Young
Writer: Fumie Kondo (novel), Eriko Shinozaki
Actors: Kanna Hashimoto, Wakana Aoi, Ai Yoshikawa, Nene Otsuka, Honami Suzuki

Plot Synopsis

Yuri goes to a female novelist and tells her that she and two of her friends committed three murders. Yuri asks the novelist to write a story about them.

WOWOW indeed the MVP of Japanese dramas able to make Kanna Hashimoto look very effective I think the reason why they cast her is because her facial expression is perfect for the thriller genre. The pacing, writing and acting is very good cinematography is also fine but it's the thriller that separates this to other great dramas. It's perhaps one of the best Japan can offer Suzuki Honami's facial expression is also me after Yuri narrates her story. Shinozaki Eriko did it again heavyweight after heavyweight Saka no Tochu and now this I'm curious what she can do to a Keigo Higashino story. Lastly I said it before and I say it again WOWOW always get the good Japanese composers Yuki Hayashi's music works wonder contributes so much to the atmosphere and the chills.

Silence

Drama: Silent
Romaji: Silent
Japanese: silent
Director: Hiroki Kazama
Writer: Miku Ubukata
Actors: Haruna Kawaguchi, Kawaguchi Ren Meguro, Ryoko Shinohara, Oji Suzuka, Kaho, Shunsuke Kazama

Plot Synopsis

Tsumugi Aoba fell in love with So Sakura, who attended the same high school. They both shared an interest in music. Their relationship got deeper and deeper, but, suddenly, Sakura said goodbye to her without giving a reason for their break-up and he disappeared.

Although I mention that I am not a fan of romance genre but it doesn't mean I don't like romance with a lot of depth on it. This drama reminds of romance Japanese dramas of the past where it is a lot less cheesy and definitely more grounded. I actually consider this as the modern version Aishiteiru to Ittekure, the plot is somewhat the same and the male lead is similar and the romantic gestures seem inspired by it. Chemistry of main couple is also very natural with side characters that not only interesting but also important to the story. As of this writing the drama is not yet finished but I can confidently recommend it.

Shijukara

Drama: Shijukara
Romaji: Shijukara
Japanese: シジュウカラ
Director: Akiko Ohku, Tomoichi Naruse, Jin Ueda
Writer: Eri Sakai (manga), Mari Kai
Actors: Sayaka Yamaguchi, Rihito Itagaki

Plot Synopsis

Watanuki Shinobu is a manga artist for the past 20 years. Despite being married and having a son, Shinobu lives her life unsatisfactorily. When Shinobu was about to give up her dreams and work, her past works became popular on ebooks and she decides to create a new work and recruit an assistant. A 22 year old young man named Tachibana Chiaki applied to be an assistant and Shinobu gradually finds her life moving forward again after a long time.

I didn't thought it would get that dark I'm on the verge of dropping this thinking it's your ordinary infidelity drama and I'm glad I didn't. If your view on world is as black and white you would hate everything in this drama writing, characters, theme etc. like all so I suggest drop it already. Exploring human condition is the thing that always fascinates me from film, documentary, books or even games so this is totally for me. Aside from the theme the atmosphere is what sucks me in, it's horror, it's original but it makes sense. The last part is also the best part as pitch black characters becoming less dark, I love how this drama made me develop sympathy for his mother whom I really despise at the beginning kudos to the writing and also the actress she is very good. It will make you think there's a cycle here and will continue to repeat over and over until someone or something stopped it which in this case a manga. I like how this drama explored this intricate relationship between our two leads it is really well made in my opinion. The ending I think is also up to interpretation because there are 2 types of ending people would want in this drama the happy ending and the logical ending I choose the latter btw.

Shizuka-chan to Papa

Drama: Shizuka-chan to Papa
Japanese: しずかちゃんとパパ
Director: Iwamoto Hitoshi, Matsubara Hiroshi
Actors: Shofukutei Tsurube, Yoshioka Riho, Nakajima Yuto

Plot Synopsis

Shizuka lives with her father Junsuke, who runs a photo studio in a local shopping district. Her father was born deaf and her mother, who was also deaf, died when Shizuka was little. Shizuka has been Junsuke's ears since she was a child. Therefore, she has a habit of staring at the other person and talking with gestures. However, this habit is perceived poorly and her colleagues at the restaurant where she works part-time do not like her.

An eye opening story about a person born deaf (papa) and a child of deaf adult (Shizuka) what a simple yet very fitting title I must say. This drama will show you their struggles in the most honest manner, no sugarcoating of words, preachy speech even the deaf main character is not portrayed as a perfect person. That CODA (children of deaf adult) part was also eye opening to me, first time I encountered that watching a drama. Because of the subject a superb characterization was possible. It explored the theme of dependency, happiness and self-acceptance really well. The acting from both Shofukutei Tsurube and Riho Yoshioka are also great. The tone of this drama is more on the joyful side but there are really a lot of tearjerker moments not the sad kind of tearjerker though but the more hopeful and inspiring kind of tearjerker.

Hikikomori Sensei

Drama: Hikikomori Sensei
Romaji: Hikikomori Sensei
Japanese: ひきこもり先生
Director: Shinichi Nishitani, Yoshimi Ishizuka
Writer: Emi Kajimoto
Actors: Jiro Sato, Honami Suzuki, Yui Sakuma

Plot Synopsis

Uwashima Yohei is a so-called "hikikomori survivor" who was withdrawn from the world for 11 years. After he finally escaped from his room 3 years ago, he opened a yakitori restaurant with the help of locals but is still reintegrating into society. He is asked to be a part-time teacher at a junior high school. The principal, Sakaki Tetsuzo, wants someone with a hikikomori background to help truant students. With the support of those around him, he finally decides to start teaching.

Out of the so many Japanese dramas that tackled these themes I think this is the most well researched. It might be hard to watch to those who are in the similar situation but it will be very educational for most people. Sato Jiro is known for his comedy but he can act serious too. The guy has some serious acting chops hard to believe he is this good.  The last episode is unexpected but powerful with a bit of social commentary thrown in. This is a must watch.

Bank Over!: Shijo Saijaku no Goto

Drama: Bank Over!: Shijo Saijaku no Goto
Japanese: バンクオーバー! ~史上最弱の強盗~
Writer: Mori Hayashi
Actors: Mamiya Shotaro, Kamishiraishi Moka

Plot Synopsis

Story of the weakest bank robber in history and a female lawyer who becomes a hostage.

These types of shows reminds me of Fish Story a lot, the editing, colorful characters how they are connected and the fun nonsense it brings well not really nonsense since this has lesson at the end. I will always come back to that as the magnum opus of this formula. If you are a fan of Japanese style of comedy this is a must watch as it is one of the funniest dramas recently.

Zenkamono

Drama: Prior Convictions: Rookie Probation Officer, Kayo Agawa
Romaji: Zenkamono
Japanese: 前科者
Director: Yoshiyuki Kishi
Writer: Masahito Kagawa (manga), Toji Tsukishima (manga), Yoshiyuki Kishi
Actors: Kasumi Arimura, Shizuka Ishibashi, Kotone Furukawa

Plot Synopsis

Kayo Agawa works part-time at a convenience store. She also begins work as a probation officer, but that is a volunteer position that does not pay a wage. Her work as a probation officer is to help rehabilitate ex-convicts and juvenile delinquents. She encounters various ex-convicts and grows as a person and a probation officer.

For a drama that serves as a promo for the movie this is very good I just wished episodes were longer but just like I said it's a promo so it's understandable. I'm surprised the story is based on the manga given the topic is well researched, grounded to reality and it being non preachy. The main protagonist works as a volunteer for a probation officer job. Her work involves helping ex-convicts and juvenile deliquents to get back to society. Acting is very good this could be among Arimura Kasumi's top 3 performances but it's Ishibashi who steal the show looking baddass with that hair. Lastly before I forget trigger warning there are scenes that might disturb you so definitely not for everyone.

Shitsuren Meshi

Drama: Shitsuren Meshi
Japanese: 失恋めし
Director: Ohku Akiko
Writer: Imai Masako
Actors: Hirose Alice, Inowaki Kai, Usuda Asami

Plot Synopsis

There are various ways to start love; there are also various ways to end love. However, one will get hungry no matter how the love ends. Kimimaru Miki is an illustrator from STO Kikaku and has a comics essay serialization called "Shitsuren Meshi" on a free paper. The comics essay mainly talks about the different people Miki meets in the city who eat delicious meals to heal their broken hearts.

Short, Fun, Food, Heartache and Love 5 words I can use to describe this drama with random quirky characters that give it a lot of life. It is slice of life in a way where we observe the protagonist, a manga artist on how she spends her day gathering data for her manga, a process which is very fascinating for me.

Nihon Chinbotsu: Kibo no Hito

Drama: Japan Sinks: People of Hope
Romaji: Nihon Chinbotsu: Kibo no Hito
Japanese: 日本沈没ー希望のひとー
Director: Shunichi Hirano, Nobuhiro Doi, Yohei Miyazaki
Writer: Sakyo Komatsu (novel), Hiroshi Hashimoto
Actors: Shun Oguri, Kenichi Matsuyama, Anne Watanabe, Anne Nakamura

Plot Synopsis

In 2023 in Tokyo, Prime Minister Higashiyama Eiichi pushes for COMS at the World Environment Conference. COMS is a method to liquify pollutants and store it in the crack of the sea floor. Prime Minister Higashiyama gathers young and talented bureaucrats and launches Japan Future Promotion Conference, which is to benefit the future of Japan. Amami Keishi of the Ministry of the Environment and Tokiwa Koichi of the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry are members of that conference.

This drama gives you another perspective on the Japan sinks series, if the anime is more on the individual struggle this one focus on the bigger picture, disaster prevention and the politics that play in the background. In a way because there is a politics involved this one is different from any disaster type of stories, a fresh concept that I have never seen before. It is a different kind of thrill to see these big figures clash heads and how the main protagonist idealistic character weight on both sides. Oguri Shun has a very interesting character; a character that I believe represents us in the story and shun played it perfect. He captures all the required emotions; the passion, determination and disappointments, it is all written on his face. Lastly aside from fascinating concept what I like is the pacing, they cut all the unnecessary dramas that are ever present in a disaster type of genre.

Tsuma, Shogakusei ni Naru

Drama: If My Wife Becomes An Elementary School Student
Romaji: Tsuma, Shougakusei ni Naru
Japanese: 妻、小学生になる
Director: Toshio Tsuboi, Takeyoshi Yamamoto, Maiko Ouchi, Naoki Kato
Writer: Yayuu Murata (manga), Satomi Oshima
Actors: Shinichi Tsutsumi, Yuriko Ishida, Aju Makita, Nono Maida, Yo Yoshida

Plot Synopsis

Keisuke’s (Shinichi Tsutsumi) wife Takae died 10 years ago. He has still has not gotten over her death. After her death, Keisuke just spends his days aimlessly. He has a daughter Mai. Keisuke wishes Mai to be happy, but he doesn't do anything for her except provide basic support. He is unattached to her emotionally and hardly talks with her. It seems their father and daughter relationship stopped 10 years ago when Takae died. One day, a strange elemental school girl appears in front of Keisuke and Mai. The girl introduces herself as Takae.

Nagi no Oitoma team did it again the formula is the same not just main characters will explore the theme but all the characters and the writer manage to weave their stories into a beautiful wonderful narrative pattern. Acting is very good the cast here is very strong I think Japan has found another Ashida Mana in Maida Nono. Having seen many Jdramas the twist doesn't feel anything special I actually saw that coming from afar but still the execution is very good speaking of execution my favorite is the homecoming part some heartwarming dialogue was thrown in that episode also that "good night" "good morning" ending is top notch metaphor. If you like family drama if you love slice of life the way Japan did it this is a must watch. My quintessential Japanese drama of 2022 as of now, Japanese sensibility at its core, they just have a unique way of observing and describing our world.

Nanba MG5

Drama: Nanba MG5
Romaji: Nanba MG5
Japanese: ナンバMG5
Director: Katsuyuki Motohiro, Masakazu Abe
Writer: Toshio Ozawa (manga), Tatsuya Kanazawa
Actors: Shotaro Mamiya, Fuju Kamio, Aoi Morikawa, Shintaro Morimoto, Nanoka Hara, Shinnosuke Mitsushima

Plot Synopsis

Born in a family of delinquents, Nanba Tsuyoshi is expected to succeed as the strongest delinquent in school. Unbeknownst to his family however, he decides to enroll in the top high school in town to live as a normal high schooler.

In terms of entertainment value I think this is on par with Kyou Kara Ore wa or maybe some would even put it side by side with My Boss My Hero since it has the familiar family aspect attach to it. The best about this drama though is the pacing no dull moments every second is worth it and every character serves their own purpose. The acting is also very good comedic timing is on point but once they get to serious part they nailed it especially Shinnosuke Mitsushima that actor is just very good.

Higashino Keigo Samayou Yaiba

Drama: Hovering Blade
Romaji: Higashino Keigo Samayou Yaiba
Japanese: 東野圭吾 さまよう刃
Director: Shinzo Katayama
Writer: Keigo Higashino (novel), Noriko Yoshida
Actors: Yutaka Takenouchi, Yuriko Ishida

Plot Synopsis

Since Shigeki’s wife passed away, he has raised his daughter Ema alone. Ema is now a high school student. Like most father and daughter relationships, they sometimes have arguments, but they still rely on each other. One night, Ema does not return from her part-time job. She is found dead.

This drama is also very good if you are interested in human psychology there are hints of subtle moments that I think are very important and they probably didn't go in depth in worry that they might excuse them for the crime. Characters in this drama are weighing on 2 sides and in the end I definitely more on the side of the chief and the reporter she may be a trash of a person herself but without her people wouldn't know these kids identity and I assure you people in Japan wouldn't let these kids have their peace they will be ostracized forever. Very good set of actors and the director knows how to use them well even for supporting roles you have Kunimura Jun, Miura Takahiro, Furutachi Kanji, Takiuchi Kumi etc. with these line up nothing can go wrong. I give kudos to WOWOW for this drama that so thought provoking will make you ask questions along its journey.

Prism

Drama: Prism
Romaji: Purizumu
Japanese: プリズム
Director: Hiroki Kazama
Writer: Miku Ubukata
Actors: Sugisaki Hana, Fujiwara Kisetsu, Moriyama Mirai

Plot Synopsis

Maejima Satsuki works part time at a garden centre in Tokyo. While her aspiration is to be a voice talent, she is on the verge of giving up. Satsuki has never been serious in what she does. It is the same with romance. However, she meets Morishita Riku who is a garden designer. After a terrarium that she made captured his attention, Satsuki ends up helping out with a garden project he has undertaken. Before long, the two of them become a couple. Then the gardener Shiraishi Yuma joins the project and Riku is greatly shaken. Satsuki is unaware of their reunion.

A perfect example why Japan is the best when it tackles bold themes that in a way doesn't felt forced at all. The inclusions of these characters are not just for the representation but because they are part of the overall theme of this story, and by doing that the characterization only get better. Clever is one word I could use to describe this drama, the placement of metaphors work within the narrative, made the story more meaningful and the message easier to digest. Characters felt complete the motivation was laid out perfectly and also there is the fragility that not only for main characters but for the side characters as well. The performances from all the actors are great; the setting is calming, healing but also reflective. In the end the drama felt it was written by someone who really cares.

Omimi ni Aimashitara

Drama: Omimi ni Aimashitara
Romaji: Omimi ni Aimashitara
Japanese: お耳に合いましたら
Director: Soushi Matsumoto, Hiroki Sugiyama, Takeshi Matsuura
Writer: Manbo Yashiro, Tomohiro Otoshi, Atsuki Tomori, Soushi Matsumoto
Actors: Marika Ito, Hiroe Igeta, Jin Suzuki

Plot Synopsis

Takamura Misono works for a company that makes tsukemono (preserved vegetable side dishes). She enjoys listening to podcasts and eating alone at home from food bought at franchise restaurants on her way from work. She isn't very good socializing with other people, but she is enthusiastic when she talks about things she likes. Her co-worker Sudo Arisa suggests to her that she should start her own podcasts. Following her suggestion, Takamura Misono starts a podcast titled Omimi ni Aimashitara. Her co-worker Sasaki Ryohei also joins the podcast. While doing the program, Takamura Misono grows as a person.

Good and fun drama though it may appear as a huge product placement of a show they made sure to connect the place/food to the lives of each character like how otoko meshi did it (another fun drama btw same vibe). But this feels more complete and relatable as they explored different relationships and situations. Lastly this drama has so much youth energy the opening and ending is brilliant. I like the creativity of this director Matsumoto Soushi...best eps 4, 6, 7, 9, 12.

Nijiiro Karute

Drama: Nizi Village Clinic (English title) / Rainbow-Colored Medical Record (literal title)
Romaji: Nijiiro Karte
Japanese: にじいろカルテ
Director: Yoshihiro Fukagawa
Writer: Yoshikazu Okada
Actors: Mitsuki Takahata, Takumi Kitamura, Arata Iura

Plot Synopsis

Kureno Masora is a young doctor who was working happily at a large hospital in Tokyo. However, she found out that she has an illness and decided to continue working as a doctor, while hiding her illness at a clinic located in a small village called "Niji no Mura". Therefore, Masora gets to meet the interesting villagers and gradually learns about facing life enthusiastically.

Even up to the very last episode the drama manage to give you a message "a small act of kindness gets rewarded". This is no different from other slice of life Japanese dramas, uplifting, full of life lesson quotes and fun side characters that give it a lot of life. Episode 3 for example is a masterpiece of storytelling the writing, themes, execution, everything is perfect. This is what separates great Jdramas to others sadly other episodes are not as good but still a very good slice of life Jdrama overall.

Saiai

Drama: Dearest (English title) / Deepest Affection (literal title)
Romaji: Saiai
Japanese: 最愛

Plot Synopsis

In 2006, Sanada Rio lived in a country village where a missing person case took place. Rio later studied in the pharmacy department at a university in Tokyo. Now, at the age of 30, Rio takes the CEO position at Sanada Wellness, which is a subsidiary of Sanada Holdings. Rio’s mother runs Sanada Holdings. Rio receives attention from the media and public because of her young age as a CEO.

From the same team that gave you N no Tame ni so if you like that drama this will be familiar as the theme of mystery/forbidden love is also present in this drama. To compare the two the mystery is good but not as thrilling as N no Tame ni, the chemistry for the main lead is a lot better though, collectively the acting is also better. Yoshitaka Yuriko and Matsushita Kouhei are both good, chemistry is magnetic, one of the best I've seen for a Japanese drama in recent years. Side characters are good too, Tanaka Minami for example had very good complicated character and she played it really well.

Shinbun Kisha

Drama: The Journalist / Newspaper Reporter (literal title)
Romaji: Shinbun Kisha
Japanese: 新聞記者
Director: Michihito Fujii
Writer: Yoshitatsu Yamada, Kazuhisa Kodera
Actors: Ryoko Yonekura, Go Ayano, Ryusei Yokohama, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Shinobu Terajima

Plot Synopsis

Matsuda Anna is a dedicated journalist who doggedly pursues the truth about a government corruption scandal even as powerful enemies seek to neutralize her reporting.

Based on real events on some Japanese government scandal what I do really like is how relatable this really is as this kind of things happen in any government. The topic it tackled is really well explored, effects of social media on people (the misinformation) and how young people are disengaged in politics. The acting is high level here Yonekura Ryoko, Ayano go & Yoshioka Hidetaka are all superb. There is also a movie version available that comes before this but I prefer this drama since it has more running time to explore more elements.

Tengoku to Jigoku: Psychona Futari

Drama: Heaven and Hell: Soul Exchange (English title) / Heaven and Hell: 2 Psycho People (literal title)
Romaji: Tengoku to Jigoku: Psychona 2nin
Japanese: 天国と地獄 ~サイコな2人~
Director: Yuichiro Hirakawa, Takahiro Aoyama, Aya Matsuki
Writer: Yoshiko Morishita
Actors: Haruka Ayase, Issey Takahashi, Tasuku Emoto

Plot Synopsis

Mochizuki Ayako is a 35-year-old detective who works hard to seek justice, but she lacks flexibility. While investigating a murder case, she targets Hidaka Haruto as a murder suspect from her collected evidence. Hidaka Haruto is a chemistry researcher, and he runs his own company. He is smart and proficient with his work, but he is also a psychopathic murderer. Right before Mochizuki Ayako arrests him, their bodies get switched.

This drama knows the how to do cliffhangers and that ending song is really good which you would appreciate as the story gets more clear. I really love that twist I didn't see that coming I thought this would be your typical romance mystery genre and I'm glad it's not. The mystery is good enough, the writing is great, and the performance from Takahashi Issei and Ayase Haruka are both superb. This drama has mix of emotional moments and comic relief which is typical for a Japanese drama. Although if you come here for the romance you might be disappointed the drama's core theme is not for both of them, let's just say it's not fluttering but heartwarming.

Uzukawamura Jiken

Drama: Uzukawamura Jiken
Romaji: Uzukawamura Jiken
Japanese: 鵜頭川村事件
Director: Yu Irie
Writer: Riu Kushiki (novel), Kiyoto Wada
Actors: Ryuhei Matsuda, Misako Renbutsu, Asuka Kudo, Anna Yamada

Plot Synopsis

The doctor Iwamori Akira’s wife Hitomi has gone missing. He visits her hometown of Uzukawa Village together with their daughter Aiko to search for her. While the two of them are staying there, heavy rain hits the surrounding region and the village is cut off. Before long, a young person is murdered. As distrust and disquiet start to hang over the village, the complication of a power struggle in a powerful family and the generational divide between angry young people and adults gradually reaches a head. The entire village inches towards a crisis.

Mystery, Horror with a bit of social commentary, the mystery is gripping enough to peak your interest but predictable if you go with your first hunch. Horror is perhaps its strongest point, it is eerie, tense, sound design is really good. Added points to the commentary, it is not in your face, you will only notice it if you pay attention, won't overshadow the mystery+horror theme of this show. Lastly I love Matsuda Ryuhei as main lead. His acting style fits like a glove to the setting and the tone of this drama. It's subtle but can get tensed when the scene requires.

Oliver na Inu, (Gosh!!) Konoyarou

Drama: Gosh!! - Police Dog Oliver and His Handler's Bizarre Case Files
Romaji: Oribana Inu, (Goshi!!) Kono Yaro
Japanese: オリバーな犬、 (Gosh!!) このヤロウ
Director: Joe Odagiri
Writer: Joe Odagiri
Actors: Sosuke Ikematsu, Masatoshi Nagase, Kumiko Aso, Tsubasa Honda, Amane Okayama

Plot Synopsis

Aoba Ippei, a police officer in the Police Dog Section of the Forensics Division, and his police dog buddy, Oliver, take on a series of inexplicable cases. As they try to solve the cases, they find themselves in the midst of various conflicting incidents.

It's hard to believe how Odagiri Joe manages to get some of these high profile actors to act in some stupid roles but this drama has unique mystery vibe and not just some random plot. That ending though is some of the weirdest thing I've seen in a Jdrama but also satisfying even it leaves more questions than answer. It's so weird that I forgot we can categorize this as a buddy cop drama.

The year is not yet finished we have yet to see netflix heavyweights Alice in borderland 2 and First Love: Hatsukoi starring Takeru Sato and Hikari Mitsushima. Also I haven't seen all the dramas for these past years but I actually seen a lot and as far as my taste goes this are what I consider the best.

  1. Thank you for the recommendations! I hope you keep them coming. I really like this a lot! (This blog is so peaceful and if it went away I'd be sad.)

  2. Thanks for your reviews. Wish you write more often.
Omameda Towako and her Ex-Husbands was wonderful. It is unusual to write a story so well crafted about getting older, the people we leave behind and how that tiny line of love and hope mends our lives and gives us the courage to face another day.
Niijiro Karute was lovely. Not only because the theme of acceptance and community values, but how understanding and loving people (as in doing the very best for their well-being and growth) around us changes lives.
Police Dog Oliver was delightful as I never thought that Japanese could venture into that kind of humor much less pull it off... I stand happily corrected. Season 2 already aired and I am wainting for the subs.
Looking forward to watch your recommendations.
Keep the good work and please do not disappear for such long periods of time.
Signal that you are OK once in a while and not as a yearly event!

    1. Replying to my own comment from November: Watched Okaeri Mone during December 2022 and the first days of January 2023. It is one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever encountered on any media format. Momone's search for meaning, healing and redemption will stay with me for a long time. Characters are organic and behaves like actual people with their own complicated lives off-screen. BTW I think the small character/great impact you talked about is the volunteer recoiling to the hidden grief of Kesennuma's inhabitants and unable to touch their hearts due to trauma.

  4. Do you have a ranking system in order from favorite to least favorite!? I just don't have time to watch all 😭 Could you say your favorite for each category?

  5. The list i needed. The new jdramas can be off putting, they dont make them like 10 years ago plus the solid actors and actresses have settled down in their personal lives. Will start on some on this list!
