Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru (2019) - First Impressions

Drama: Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru
Romaji: Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru
Japanese: ブスの瞳に恋してる 2019
Writer: Suzuki Osamu (novel)
Network: dTV
Actors: Kataoka Naoto (EXILE), Tomita Miu

Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru is a drama based on the love story between Suzuki Osamu & Oshima Miyuki, the former is a director/screenwriter, and the later is a famous comedian. This drama is also a remake of the 2006 drama, but this time with different characters and setting. The difference is now heroine aims to be a voice actor and not an actress.

This drama is about a love story between a girl who is ugly based on society's standard and a good looking celebrity voice actor. Unlike other fans, the girl doesn't like him for his looks, but because of how she was inspired by his voice acting talent. The guy was moved and got drawn to her when he heard that.

The plot seems generic at first like your typical ugly girl who makes this hot guy fall in love with her. I know you are familiar with those movies where this girl will get her transformation to become a drop-dead gorgeous woman and the guy will fall for after. This drama is different in which the girl is just an ordinary girl whose charm lies with her personality than her looks. As cliché as it may sound, the guy loves her because of her personality and not for her looks.

Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru is not best drama when it comes to technical aspect and especially the script is somewhat mediocre, but if you are looking for entertainment and if this kind of plot is your thing then I highly recommend you to watch this drama. It has funny moments, and the main actress Tomita Miu is a great actress. She is good in comedy but also got acting chops for emotional scenes.

The problem is the main actor as I didn't feel any acting from him or maybe that is just how the character is written in the show. Just like the 2006 version they also cast boy band member in this drama, Kataoka Naoto, an active member of the Japanese boy band "Exile."

Main leads also don't have chemistry, and that is a big problem when it comes to romantic comedy. The guy is 17 years older than the girl, and some scenes it's just awkward seeing them together. He could seriously pass as her dad.

The first episode didn't impress me at all, but I also think maybe I'm not the target audience for this type of show. This drama might be a fun watch to people who are looking for a cute romance drama.
