Here comes that time of the year where we get another Shoujo drama that will make the hearts of romance Jdrama fans flutter. Last year we got HajiKoi and Coffee and Vanilla, and few years before that Good Morning Call and the uber popular Itazura na Kiss.
The story begins when Sakura fell in love at first sight with the charismatic Doctor Kairi Tendo. She then decided to become a nurse so that she will see him again. Fast forward 5 years later she became a nurse to the same hospital as Doctor Tendo. But to her dismay his personality is not what she had imagined. Doctor Tendo is such a snub and has this very stoic and perfectionist personality. He is commonly referred by his co workers as the devil.
Out of nowhere she confessed her love to him which Doctor Tendo brushed her away right away. Her co workers admired her persistence and gave her the nickname warrior like a warrior that hopefully would tamed the devil, the drama play with this idea the whole time which is a nice reference to the classic Japanese role playing game dragon quest.
Koi wa Tsuzuku yo Doko Made with English title Love Lasts Forever shared similarities with Itazura na Kiss. It is the same story where the female lead fell head over heels with a guy who doesn't care about her. They also live close to each other, not in the same house but this time as neighbors. Like most Shoujo themed drama this is very cliché to boot like dejavu and the story seems very predictable too.
The appeal with this type of love story is viewers would cheer for this klutz plain jane female lead as she tries to win the heart of this prince-like snobbish male lead. I personally don't like this air head female lead trope but there is a huge market for this as we get this same type of story every year.
But hold on right there I didn't say this drama sucks in fact I like it a lot and it's because of this one aspect called character development. Unlike other dramas with airhead female lead Sakura didn't stay air head the whole time she grows from being incompetent nurse to a girl you would admire.
The acting is also better compared with its contemporaries. If you follow Japanese entertainment scene you would know Takeru Sato is an A-list actor. I thought he would struggle to fit this shoujo prince role because I used to see him in more dramatic and action roles but I was wrong. Mone Kamishiraishi most known for lending her voice for Mitsuha in Your Name is fantastic in her role. She is natural portraying this plain jane character that's why I didn't feel any cringe watching her. She also nailed those dramatic scenes convincingly. The success of this drama would all come down with the character of Sakura and I think the casting people succeed, It is almost felt Mone carried this whole show to me.
Now for the most important question. How is their chemistry in this drama? All I can say is It didn't start as strong compared to other romance dramas. It grew stronger as the story goes per episode and I think it is better as it felt more natural and less fan service.
Conclusion time, If you lke classic doki doki romance then this is a must watch but if you are tired of the same cliches and want something new then better skip this drama.
It's adapted from manga with the same title. Sakura once give up om her love to Tendo Kairi in Manga. But, the live action version Sakura keep on fight to get Tendo's love and attention, that's why it gives same vibe with Itazura na Kiss. There's a lot of changes in live action which sometimes I feel so bad to change.
