Laplace's Witch (2018) Review

Movie: Laplace's Witch
Romaji: Rapurasu no Majo
Japanese: ラプラスの魔女
Actors: Sho Sakurai, Suzu Hirose, Sota Fukushi, Mirai Shida, Hiroshi Tamaki, Lily Franky, Etsushi Toyokawa
Director: Takashi Miike
Writer: Keigo Higashino (novel), Hiroyuki Yatsu

The title of the movie is based on Pierre-Simon Laplace the French mathematician who is famous for his theory "Laplace Demon". This theory states that if someone (the demon) knows the precise location and momentum of every atom in the universe, their past and future values for any given time are entailed; they can be calculated from the laws of classical mechanics. That theory is basically this movie is about.

Meet our protagonist Madoka Uhara(suzu hirose). She is a demon in Laplace theory as she can guess correctly that a natural phenomenon will take place. In that incident where two people are poisoned by hydrogen sulfide at hot springs located in different regions, she helps professor Shunsuke Aoe(Sho Sakurai), who is a geochemist, to determine whether the deaths are caused by freak incident or were murders. As you can tell by now, there are now witch with wands in this movie but rather the witch here has advance knowledge and capable of things explained in Laplace theory.

As for the movie it is slow (boring) in the beginning until it became a bit engaging during the latter half but sadly it is not enough to save the movie. Plot twist are very predictable and the resolve of the main villain is dumb, you won't get angry at the villain here because he is evil but rather because his reason for his actions doesn't make sense. There are cool scenes in this movie though like when Madoka threw the paper plane, went circles in the air then came back to Madoka, that scene was done brilliantly. Also, if you expect to see any romance in this movie you will be disappointed.

CGI is mediocre at best. It's just sad because some scene would have been great if only the CGI were ok. It didn't blend well in the surroundings as I could tell right away if it's CGI or not. Sota Fukushi's acting here is bad again. I just couldn't understand why he is still getting casted in movies other than romance. I mean he is not suited to play this type of character because of his habit to overreact. He should just stick with romance movies where he is good as he is always has chemistry with anyone he get paired with. On the other hand, Suzu Hirose and Sho sakurai are at least good but sadly Sakura's character was a bit irrelevant in this story, it is just weak of a character.

Only watch if you are a fan of these actors especially Suzu cause she looks so cute here otherwise stay away, there are more 2 hours sci-fi movies that are better than this or just use your time on better things cause you will end up wasting your precious 2 hours in this movie.
